Dongfanghong
Also known as “Chairman’s Tea” due to its historical association as a tribute to Chairman Mao. During the Great Leap Forward period, it was renamed Dongfanghong. In 1990, a new generation was cultivated by grafting from the mother tree, now most commonly seen as Dongfanghong No. 2 on the market. The mother tree of Dongfanghong No. 2 is about 600 years old and stands next to the ancient Xianweng tree.
Varietal Characteristics: Notes of gardenia, fruity honey aroma, and a lingering mountain fragrance.
The dry leaves are dark brown and tightly rolled. Aroma upon smelling: charcoal roasting, caramel and honey sweetness, subtle gardenia, with a mellow and understated fragrance.
First infusion: 5s – caramel and floral honey aroma, prominent sweetness, delicate lasting note at the front of the throat, lingering fragrance between the teeth with a slight salivation, and a hint of green grass on the tongue after tasting.
Second infusion: 8s – caramel and floral honey aroma, clean and sweet, a clear lingering flavor, sweet and refreshing in the mouth, with a grassy juice aftertaste.
Third infusion: 5s – mainly floral honey aroma, smooth infusion with a trace of forest, grassy sweetness in the finish, with the texture and flavor lingering long in the mouth.
Fourth infusion: 5s – mainly floral aroma, ripe fruity notes, smooth and sweet liquor, grassy return sweet aftertaste, lingering flavor.
Fifth infusion: 8s – sweet honey aroma, smooth and sweet, grassy aftertaste, persistent lingering flavor and floral notes apparent in the breath.
Sixth infusion: 10s – floral honey and ripe fruit aroma, grassy aftertaste, the flavor is still present and persistent.
